It's like Frodo says...

“How do you pick up the threads of an old life? How do you go on, when in your heart you begin to understand there is no going back? There are some things that time cannot mend. Some hurts that go too deep, that have taken hold.”

Lately when the grief of the last 2 years crashes over me, I do my best to breathe through each moment. I take another walk, I go paint something, I pull out my knitting, I take solace in the work of my hands, because what else can you do?

More and more of the tiny brave crocus blooms are popping up in our rocky front flower bed each day. When I walk through the neighborhood, other people’s flowers are much farther along, but I try not to hold that comparison too close. My wee flowers are doing their best in a home that is somewhat unprepared and inhospitable. I walk outside and encourage them to grow anyway, every day. I scattered poppy, nasturtium and wildflower seeds in various places around the yard, so maybe they will sprout next.  Morning glories and sunflowers are going in the ground soon where hopefully they will brighten our fence line , and I will be popping in some dutch iris and dahlias for late summer blooming. I am the most haphazard and random of gardeners. But sometimes things manage to thrive anyway and I am hoping for happy bees this summer.

I’m not telling the Captain about the iris bulbs - they’re his favorite and I’m just hoping to pleasantly surprise him when they all pop up.

A family of the good friends are soon to take up residence at the base of our big friendly maple tree - their front door, mailbox, and a tiny garden are going in quite soon. I'm not mentioning that to the grandkids either.  We are just going to let the children randomly discover them…

I guess that’s one answer to how we pick up the threads. We paint, we plant flowers, we breathe, we keep going. We carefully place tiny joys for people to find later. We keep magic alive in the world. We keep going, we do our best, we hope for happy bees. It's really all we can do.

Keep going. <3
